Arden School, Solihull KS3 Girls, Kiara, Milly, Mia, Tessa (WSBA players) and Katie took part in the KS3 National Schools Championship finals on the 17th of April 2016 at the Milton Keynes National Badminton Centre. The competition started in 2015 with 1600 schools across the country taking part in local, county and regional rounds before progressing to the finals. The Arden girls had not dropped a single game on reaching finals day which stood them in good stead as they began their first round of matches. The day started with three teams in each box before the top three from each box competed for the top honours of bronze, silver and gold. The Arden girls started in top form, the only team not to drop a single game as they progressed into the final three. However, the other two teams that also progressed into the last three included the 2015 champions Westgate from Hampshire and Chelmsford High School who took narrowly beat the Arden girls last year to take fourth position. The pressure was truly on and the girls had to watch Westgate and Chelmsford battle it out with last year’s champions taking the honours 3 games to 2, which guaranteed Westgate at least silver medal. Arden took on Chelmsford taking a commanding two nil lead with Kiara winning a closely fought singles battle 21 – 17 and then Mia and Tessa showing their skill and tenacity out playing the Chelmsford girls. Milly then took part in a riveting singles match with Mia H and unfortunately just lost out 21-20. The Arden girls rallied together to take the next to matches walking away with a 4 - 1 lead. The final was set up for the Arden girls to take on Westgate the 2015 champions. The first match saw Kiara taking on Annie , both girls are England Juniors. Kiara coming out the victor 21 – 17. The next match saw the mighty Mia and Tessa dominate the match resulting in a 2 – 0 lead to Arden. Milly then battled hard against an older and more experienced player to narrowly to miss out on a win. Kiara and Tessa then came up against Annie and her partner, who were equally matched. The match was intense but Westgate narrowly taking the win to level the games at 2 – 2. The final and deciding match was down to Milly and Mia to take on the Westgate girls. Milly and Mia took a dominating lead which they maintained to take the final win and to crown Arden School as the new Schools National Champions.
It was a great team effort and supported by the teachers Ms West and Ms Heard.
Congratulations from everyone at WSBA - what a fantastic achievement for the girls and their school.
